Legal | Court Admissible DNA Paternity Test
A DNA paternity test compares a child’s DNA profile with that of the possible father to determine if there is a match. A legal paternity test is valuable because you can use the test results in court. Unlike the tests, you can take at home, where the people tested can’t be legally identified. This test will give you THE answer in a legal document. Legal DNA paternity tests include verifying participant IDs and witnessed DNA collection by an approved and impartial party.
Some common reasons for a legal test include the following:
What is AABB and ANAB accreditation?
The AABB’s Relationship Testing Accreditation program is the international gold standard for DNA paternity testing laboratories. The program establishes and promotes the highest standards of testing quality and care for patients and clients in all aspects of parentage and other relationship testing. Most courts and other government agencies mandate that DNA tests be performed by AABB-accredited laboratories.
ANAB is an international laboratory accreditation organization and is signatory of the IAF and IAAC multilateral cooperative arrangements (MLAs). Through the IAF, ILAC, IAAC, and APLAC MRAs/MLAs and the Multilateral Cooperative Accreditation Arrangement, ANAB cooperates with other accreditation bodies around the world ensuring that accredited certificates are recognized nationally and internationally. ISO/IEC 17025 is the international standard set for ensuring the technical competency of laboratories and covers every aspect of laboratory management including to name a few, sample preparation, analytical testing proficiency, record keeping and reports.
DNA testing is a complex process that involves several steps to accurately analyze and interpret genetic information.
Here are the general steps involved in DNA testing:
WE GET THE PROCESS ROLLING FOR YOU.
1. Sample Collection: The first step in DNA testing is to collect a sample containing DNA. This can be done by swabbing the inside of the cheek. Buccal swabs are the most common method and involve gently swabbing the inside of the cheeks to collect cells containing DNA.
2. Chain of custody: To ensure the integrity and accuracy of the test results, it is crucial to maintain a strict chain of custody throughout the testing process.
This involves properly documenting and labeling the collected samples, ensuring they are securely stored, and tracking their movement from collection to analysis.
3. Laboratory analysis: Once the samples are collected, they are sent to a certified DNA testing laboratory for analysis. In the laboratory, the DNA is extracted from the samples and specific regions of the DNA, known as genetic markers, are analyzed. These genetic markers are highly variable among individuals and can be used to establish biological relationships. The laboratory technicians analyze the DNA profiles and calculate the probability of paternity based on the similarities or differences between the genetic markers. For example, the results are typically expressed as a probability of paternity, such as 99.9% or higher for inclusion (indicating a high likelihood of paternity) or 0% for exclusion (indicating no biological relationship).
4. Reporting the results: Once the analysis is complete, the laboratory will provide a detailed report of the test results. The report will include the probability of paternity, any limitations or caveats, and a clear interpretation of the findings.
5. Confidentiality and privacy: DNA testing involves sensitive and personal information. Reputable laboratories prioritize confidentiality and privacy, ensuring that the test results and personal information are kept secure and only shared with authorized individuals. It is important to note that DNA testing should be conducted by accredited laboratories (AABB) using validated methods and strict quality control measures to ensure accurate and reliable results.
